In Chicago

We arrived safely yesterday afternoon in the mid-90 degree heat. I am pretty sure this is the only time we have been in Chicago and it was this warm. It doesn’t bother me, since we are accustomed to heat. It was however about ten degrees cooler today, and it has been forecasted to remain around that or a bit cooler for the duration of our stay. I won’t bore you with more talk of traffic or weather though. Shall we get right to the pictures?2012 06 21_1326.JPG

As I mentioned before we are going to try out a yarn winding station so here’s how we have that set up. 2012 06 21_1315.JPG

2012 06 21_1316.JPG

All of the vendors were granted some extra room this year and we took advantage of it by stretching out and I am very pleased with how the booth looks. I am afraid the pictures don’t do it justice. You will just have to come by and see for yourself. :-)2012 06 21_1317.JPG

The market is open 10am-6pm on Friday, Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sunday.

Miscellaneous Monday

It’s almost time for our travel break to come to an end. We will be heading to Grayslake, IL  on Wednesday for the 6th annual Midwest Fiber and Folk Art Fair. We have been attending as vendors every year since its inception in 2007. It has changed locations 3 times as well as moving the date up from the third weekend of July to its present date of the fourth weekend in June.

We will be trying something new in our booth next weekend. We will be offering a yarn winding service. One of the girls will be manning the station. We will not be charging for it, but tips will be gratefully accepted. I think it will be a nice opportunity for customers to see our swifts in action. Hopefully it will work out and if it does we may do it more often. We’ll see how it goes.

Here’s a picture from last year’s Fair. We are in the same location this year too, which is booths 102-103C. We are right next door to The Fold and Handspun by Stephania.

I really like the new venue. It’s a much better fit for the Fair than the Henry Co. college where it was held in 2008 and 2009. I always look forward to going to Chicago. I used to be intimidated by driving through the city pulling my trailer, but I am a pretty seasoned traveler at this point.

We will be packing tomorrow and driving most of Wednesday, so I decided I really needed to fit in a blog post today even though I don’t have a whole lot of news to share on the knitting front. I snapped a shot of my progress on Sticks and Stones. I like how the fabric looks and feels, however I am afraid that it is indeed turning out smaller than 38”. I measured across it today and it is closer to 36”. Maybe the blocking will help. Heh.

Here’s what else has been occupying me this week. Do you recall in my last post that I was waiting for this CD to arrive?

2012 06 18_1313.JPG

It did arrive, later that day in fact. I got it a day early. I was so excited but I waited until I could have an uninterrupted hour to listen to it the first time. Later that night, when the house was settled, more or less, I finally put it in my CD player. Let me tell you that it was well worth the wait! I have not been able to stop listening to it. I have played it at least one time every day, and sometimes more. It’s kind of like when  you have chocolate in the house and you just can’t resist eating a little every day. What, you mean not everyone does this?

But I digress. If you happen to be a Rush fan, you probably already have it and know what I am talking about. I am willing to bet that most of you aren’t, however, and that’s okay. I hope you don’t mind my occasional gushing over them. Their music just gets to me in a special way. I think I must be weird in my musical tastes since I don’t like the kind of music that is typically “chick” music. I tend to favor stuff that mainly has a male fan-base. I don’t know why, but there it is.

Actually I am a little unique in my taste in books too. I don’t care for romance books at all. The Outlander Series was as close as I ever get to that, and honestly some of that was a bit much for me. I have lately been in a crime novel mood. I read several of those and then on a whim a couple days ago I decided to re-read a Stephen King novel from 1988, The Tommyknockers, which I read when it came out. I had forgotten most of it except for a few major plot details. I am 150 pages in already. Good stuff.

Cast on for Sticks and Stones

2012 06 11_1289.JPG

As you can see I made good on my plan to cast on for my Sticks and Stones vest.  You can see more details here on my Ravelry project page. I am pretty sure at this point that I will make a cardigan version of the vest, but since I am starting with the back piece I can reserve the final decision until I cast on for the front(s).

2012 06 11_1288.JPG

It is working up nicely in this yarn on the 4’s for the rib and the 5’s for the main stitch pattern. My swatch was a little small, 1 short stitch in 4”, but I am hoping it will loosen up a tiny bit when I am working on the larger pieces. I was reluctant to go any bigger with the needles since this is a rather fine sport weight at 365 yards in 100 g and since it is a soft merino wool, will by nature be more likely to pill if knit to loosely.

I debated making the 42.5” since to be on the safe side. Despite the fact that my bust measures around 40-41” whenever I make sweaters that big, they seem too large. So, I went for the 38.75” and if it’s too small, maybe one of the girls will want to wear it. It’s mainly a booth sample anyway, but I do wear them too.

2012 06 11_1295.JPG

I am anxiously awaiting the new Rush Clockwork Angels CD which will arrive on it’s release date tomorrow. I will be stalking the mailbox all day I am sure, LOL!  I see it is only $11.99 now. I pre-ordered it in March the minute it went up for sale and paid $14.99 for it, but that’s okay since I will get it delivered on the release date without having to go out to pick it up. Yay! Oh, and notice my shirt there? :-D

2012 06 11_1306.JPG

I will leave you with the yummy pasta sauce I started for dinner today. It’s a simple marinara with mixed peppers, onions, garlic, chicken and black olives, slow simmered for better flavor. Got to go cook the pasta! I am starving.

Hello blog, did you miss me?

So sorry for the week long interruption in posts. We had another show this past weekend, the Hoosier Hills Fiber Festival in Franklin, IN. I regretfully neglected to get any pictures. In my defense I didn’t have a decent internet connection most of the time while we were there. The Wi-Fi at the hotel was abysmal and there was none at the Johnson Co. Fairgrounds anymore. I tried tethering my phone but the signal was being blocked by the building. I could sporadically get websites to load and emails to come through, but you could forget uploading pictures. Sigh.

Anyway we are back home now with REAL high speed internet. Bliss! We are actually going to be home for a whole two weeks! Of course we won’t be idle. We have a big order to dye this week. I got all the dyes mixed the last two days and got the yarn ready for dyeing today. We will probably be able to get all of it done in a day or two. 2012 06 05_1234.JPG

I can’t show you the color or tell you any details since it is for a club, but here’s the boatload of dye I mixed up.

2012 06 05_1237.JPG

I got a little sock knitting done, but to be honest I was itching for something different yesterday.

2012 06 05_1224.JPG

So…..I swatched for Sticks and Stones in my Classic Merino Sport with my new color Tiger Lily.  I am planning to do the vest version. I used #5 needles in pattern and am pretty close to gauge. You like? :-)

2012 06 05_1228.JPG

I thought this Rose of Sharon was looking especially pretty this morning. The picture doesn’t give you the full scale of it’s size. It’s probably about 12 feet tall, believe it or not.

More from Wooster

I promised some more highlights from the festival today, so here you go.

2012 05 26_1221.JPG

We had a very busy morning in the booth but I think the heat has driven most of the fair goers to cooler locales for the afternoon, since it pretty much cleared out after 3:00 or so. That’s okay though since it gives me time to write a post. :-)

2012 05 26_1222.JPG

I saw so many of my regular customers and friends today! Thank you all for stopping in the booth! I am afraid I didn’t get an opportunity to get many pictures of them but I did get a few.

2012 05 26_1217.JPG

I was excited to see Erica Owens who you may know as majordomo at Knitspot.com now. Her first baby is due later this summer and I was happy to contribute some knitting love her way. Every baby should have copious amounts of hand knits, don’t you agree? I was just doing my part. :-)

2012 05 26_1211.JPG

Anne Hanson also made her way to the booth a few times and she graciously submitted to a picture. Isn’t she adorable? We chatted a bit and she picked out a Yarn Bowl to take home.

2012 05 26_1214_edited-1.JPG

The rest of are of Elijah being cute. ;-)

Great Lakes Fiber show 2012

I hope you all aren’t getting bored with my booth updates. It’s about all I am doing lately so if I wasn’t sharing this I don’t know what else I would have to report, LOL!

2012 05 25_1202.JPG

We drove to Wooster, OH yesterday and went to the fairgrounds this morning to get the booth ready for the festival this weekend.

2012 05 25_1200.JPG

We have the luxury at this show of a nice roomy space to stretch out in. I love this show!

2012 05 25_1203.JPG

2012 05 25_1201.JPG

One of my favorite things about it is that here is where I first met Anne Hanson of Knitspot. I have enjoyed so much getting to know her and occasionally working together on designs using my yarns. She comes out to the festival every year and I enjoy seeing and visiting with her and her spinning group. Hopefully I can coerce her into a picture or two tomorrow if I remember. :-)

2012 05 25_1204.JPG

After we finished at the fairgrounds we headed to the Walmart for a few things and then to the hotel to have lunch.  After lunch the girls went to the pool while I got Elijah down for a nap.  I did a little reading and then got out my computer to write this post while I had a little quiet time.

2012 05 25_1209.JPG

Okay, here’s the oh so exciting knitting progress shot, LOL! Yep, I got the toe of the second sock done. That’s it. I seriously have almost zero knitting time right now. Well, I guess I could be knitting right now, but then there would be no blog post….

2012 05 25_1206.JPG

Okay that’s all for now. :-)

World Without End review from my Goodreads profile

World Without EndWorld Without End by Ken Follett

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A good story that kept my attention all the way through to the end.

While I didn’t like or even identify with all the characters, I did feel like I was sufficiently familiar with the main players to keep up with them. There were a handful of minor characters that I would get fuzzy on at times, but overall I would say they were done well enough for me to follow.

I would recommend this to anyone who liked The Pillars of the Earth and want to relive that with a slightly different cast of characters. Honestly though, the characters feel like they are rehashed from the Pillars, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. As I said they are pretty well fleshed out even if sometimes a bit predicable.

The main plot lines are resolved in the end. I did feel bad about what happened to Ralph for some reason. I can’t explain why since he certainly got what he deserved. I think I would have been less bothered if Philemon had suffered a similar end.

Kentucky Sheep & Wool 2012

Well we are on the road again and blogging live from Masterson Station Park in Lexington, KY at the Kentucky Sheep & Wool festival. We are in the Ag Pavilion Building in booth 9, which is in the corner.

It is lovely warm and sunny weather here. We expect it to be in the mid 80’s, which is nice.

2012 05 19_1186.JPG

Yesterday was a pretty full day with the drive up and setting up the booth, but we were done 3:00 and so had the evening to relax in the hotel. Today we had to get an early start though so it was good to be able to turn in early and get plenty of ret for what will hopefully be a busy two days.

2012 05 19_1185.JPG

This horse is in the front of the hotel and it immediately attracted Elijah’s notice when we were unloading the luggage yesterday, LOL!

Here’s my knitting progress on my sock. I am not sure how tall I will make the cuff yet. Probably a few more inches.

2012 05 19_1184.JPG

I am only a few pages short of finishing my book, World Without End. I tried to finish this morning while I was having coffee and breakfast but I ran out of time. I may have some comments next time, but will save them until I am totally done.

More festival highlights

2012 05 13_1178.JPG

More highlights from the Shepherd’s Harvest Festival 2012. We arrived home yesterday afternoon after a two drive. We had a great show and thank all who make it such an awesome event. It was worth the trip once again.

I am, and will remain for the next month or two,  busier than a one-armed paper hanger, so the posts may be sporadic and more pictures than text for awhile.

2012 05 13_1173.JPG

My son like most boys, was completely taken with all the machinery. I am told he dragged the girls from one to the next all afternoon.

Oh my. Whatever is he thinking at this moment?

2012 05 13_1137.JPG

I always get a chuckle from how alpacas look after a fresh shearing. I wonder if they are glad or humiliated? LOL!

Shepherd’s Harvest Fiber Festival 2012

I only have time for a quick post this morning. We arrived in MN late Thursday afternoon. We got our booth set up on Friday and just hung out at the hotel for what little time we weren’t driving or working.

I didn’t remember to get any pictures to share until this morning. I gave Cassie the camera to get some more today since she won’t be working the booth and might be able to get some interesting stuff while entertaining the toddler. I did take these this morning before the crowds converge. 2012 05 12_1104_edited-1.JPG
