We are pleased to introduce you to our new colors in our lineup. Pictures are linked to the products on the website. :-)

It’s always interesting to see how the same colors look so different on the different bases isn’t it?

I am super busy this week getting ready for our travels beginning early next week. Therefore I don’t have much time for a long post today. I will try to write another post in a few days and catch you up on my reading and other various stuff. Not much knitting to report anyway. TTYL!

Sneak Peek

I only have a few minutes because I have to get working on yarn today. I wanted to give you a quick sneak peek at the new colors tough. Here’s a glimpse at about half of what we dyed yesterday. Sorry for the phone pictures. I was in a hurry. :-)

Psst…don’t forget to take advantage of our Yarn Sale. As you can see we need the room. So go ahead and clear us out of those discontinued colors please! :-) Sorry I can’t link just to the sale stuff but go to any yarn base and choose the colors. They are Aubergine, Red Grape, Pear, and Dark Rose.

New colors and a Bon Voyage SALE

We have the winners of the color experiments! I have the dye all mixed. The yarn is all skeined. Dyeing to commence in the next day or two.

Here are the finalists:

Below are the results of tweaking the purple and pink one final time. I decided on the ones on the bottom. They go best with the rest of our colors. I really like the pink one now. :-)

2013 07 12_3961_edited-1.JPG

I haven’t picked out names yet but was offered a few good suggestions from Kristi (I especially liked Varying Violet). I think I have decided on the yellow one though. I looks so much like Summer Squash to me that I think that’s what it has to be. Peach sounds a little boring, even though that’s what it is. I will have to come up with something better than that. Maybe Southern Peach? hmm… I have nothing on the pink one. I will see what I think when I see the full size skeins I suppose. Feel free to add any suggestions for any of the colors in the comments. I will welcome any help!

On the slightly bittersweet side is the fact that adding four new colors means we must discontinue four colors. Rats! But on the bright side. for you anyway, is that we are marking all the discontinued colors half price until they are gone. What a deal for you right? The colors going “bye-bye” are Aubergine, Dark Rose, Red Grape, and Pear. To shop the sale go to the Hand Dyed Yarn and highlight the color you want from the dropdown selector. Sale prices are displayed after you do that. :-)

On to knitting progress minute though it may be. I can not believe this is the sum total of my knitting since the end of April. Sheesh. As you can see I have finally gotten to the home stretch on my small Sorrel. I have started the yoke at last. Yay!

Color Trials

2013 07 03_3943_edited-1.JPG

The following are the first trials of four possible new colors. Of these peach samples I am leaning towards the lighter version on the top since it is the most different to any in the current color palette. I like the darker one too, but it’s a similar value to the Persimmon, so the lighter one is a better choice for balance. This is the only color I was pleased with in the first batch.

I was going for the chip called Frosty Melon, and got pretty close. :-) Might even go with that name. What do you think?

2013 07 03_3948.JPG

This is the initial trial for the purple. I am going for the color in the middle and as you can see the hue is a bit too blue so back to the drawing board.

2013 07 03_3901.JPG

Top ones are the first samples. The bottom sets are much closer to the sample card with the one on the left being the winner. I like the bottom right sample a lot but it’s not quite what I was going for. The challenge in naming this one is that on each base it looks different. Any suggestions?

2013 07 03_3949_edited-1.JPG

Okay now on to the yellow candidates. Here are the first samples and I wasn’t sure which color on the card I wanted so tried a couple values. The consensus is that the darker value (bottom) is more interesting and wearable. What do you think?

I also wasn’t sure about the brightness and couldn’t resist the urge to try it a bit more muted so I lowered the intensity and this is the result.

2013 07 03_3899_edited-1.JPG

The ones at the left are the lightest (top above) the middle ones are the darker (bottom above) and the ones on the right side are the tweaked version. The girls all prefer the middle (bright dark) version. I like the muted one of course but the main question is which do you find most wearable? The bright Summer Squash color or the earthy Maize color?

2013 07 03_3951.JPG

Finally the pink trial. I was going for the lighter card on the top of the card, but tried a darker value in case the middle color would strike my fancy more. We are on the fence about which one to go with. Is it too bright and Barbie-ish? Would you wear it?

I decided to tweak it a bit and see how I liked that but I think I was to cautious since I can barely discern any difference. I only tried it out on the lighter version.

2013 07 03_3900_edited-1.JPG

The left side and middle are the first and second trials of the light value and the right side samples are the dark version. My leaning is towards the one on the left. No name ideas yet but it begs a flower name don’t you think? Peony? Azalea? Something else?

My little one turned 3 yesterday. Hard to believe isn’t it? You can’t see his new Thomas the train in this picture but that us what he’s doing. We took him up to pick a toy and trains are his current favorite thing.

A Study in Color

In preparation for our summer dye session I am brushing up on my color theory and mixing and deciding on what new colors to create this year.

2013 06 29_3896.JPG

I was reading through Betty Edwards’ Color which is aimed at mixing and using paints/pigments. It is different than working with dyes because dyes are opaque and also you use depth of shade instead of adding white to adjust value, the color theory is still tremendously instructive. Her exercises inspired me to create a color wheel of my dye stocks to better arrange them in my mind of where they fall on it. Her ideas of assigning a clock face and in a circle is a great visual exercise for seeing “into” a color to identify it’s hue and it’s direct complement. You will also notice a gray scale in a circle which is helpful for determining value.

color study

All this is invaluable to seeing a given color and mixing it. First you must identify the hue from the twelve (3 primary, 3 secondary, and 6 tertiary). Next judge the value, or lightness/darkness. You can see on the black and white version of my stock color wheel below how those translate. Thirdly determine the intensity (saturation of hue). Is it closer to pure hue or “dulled”. Here’s where knowing the complements by heart is invaluable.

color study

It’s all very fascinating to me, this thing of color. It is really in the brain that it happens and it’s positively mysterious. ;-)

So, after my refresher course I went to my local Lowe’s to visit the paint department to collect a stack of chips for study and inspiration. I have three or four firm ideas to experiment with. I am leaning towards a yellow, and clear purple, and a medium pink. The challenge for me is that I have to constrain my colors to 26 in my palette and I want to keep it balanced in value and hue. This means for every new color I must discontinue one color. That’s the hard part. Saying goodbye to colors is bittersweet. New colors are fun but the old ones are familiar friends. :-)

On the knitting front I did get a bit accomplished on Sorrel this week. I completed the body and one sleeve while re-watching A Study in Pink which is the new PBS series Sherlock. I finished A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of the Four in the book and so it was fun to watch that and get some knitting done.

2013 06 29_3898.JPG

Okay I have a fair bit of work to do so I will close for now. See you later. :-)

Busy time of the year

Not much knitting going on I am disappointed to report, but that is because we are super busy around these parts on many other things.

It’s not unusual for the start of the new year to be hectic. Even if we weren’t adding new products and re-doing the website, there is inventory counting, taxes, end-of-the-year record keeping, and the list goes on. I don’t know why I think every year as we close out the show season that I will have months of time to knit. Sheesh! You would think I would have more sense than that by now, but a knitter can hope right?

Anyway, I am very excited about how the new website is coming along and can’t wait to unveil it. It’s not quite ready for prime time yet but believe me you all will be the first to hear about it when it is live. :-)2013 01 11_2561.JPG

2013 01 11_2563_edited-1.JPG

Here’s some of the other stuff we are doing in the product creation line of the business. This is the time of year that we dye up the yarn for the spring show season so that has been happen as the weather allows. We have a few days of chilly but dry weather so we got all the solids dyed. The rain returned before we could get it all dry so we have been praying for a window of dry weather. Today is that day, since we are expecting partly cloudy skies and a high of 73 degrees, so out went the last two-thirds of it on the lines today. We are hoping that will do it since the cold and rain are returning tomorrow or the next day. 2013 01 11_2578_edited-1.JPG

Meredith has been working full tilt on the new leather shawl pin rings and I believe ya’ll are going to flip for these. They are so cool!

We have been out of stock on these for awhile but never fear, he has plenty planned. We are also learning some new embellishing techniques to add to many of them. I think they are going to be well received too. :-)

Dye day II

I spent Monday morning grocery shopping and other necessary chores. In the afternoon I was back down I the dye studio mixing colors in preparation for dyeing the semi-solids.  2012 07 23_1470.JPG

I have a a system of Excel spreadsheets to keep track of my color mixes. When I am ready to mix dye stock and mix colors from that, I only have to plug in the values, print out my information and get to work.

2012 07 23_1471_edited-1.JPG

I start that process by weighing out the dye powder on my triple beam balance scale. (I forgot to get a picture of this step, and besides I have to wear a respirator and gloves which makes handling the camera difficult.) Then I need to mix 1% solutions of the primaries I mix from. The next step is actually mixing my colors from my recipes. While I was doing all this Meredith and the other girls spent the afternoon getting the yarn ready so we could be all ready to go on Tuesday morning.

I like to listen to music or an audiobook while I am working.  Here’s a “lovely” self portrait of me with my iPod. :-)

2012 07 24_1450_edited-1.JPG

I went out after breakfast and put the yarn in to soak while getting the pots set up for the days’ work. We decided to set them up under the trees for a change where it would be shady for most of the day since the heat index is in the triple digits this week. It did help so we will probably keep doing that. It is only a few steps farther from the water and worth it for the shade. 2012 07 24_1445.JPG

We had the first batch in the pots by about 10:30 or so.

2012 07 24_1446.JPG

After the cooking process we put the yarn out on tables to rinse. We have an old washing machine in the studio for spinning out the excess water. This helps the yarn to dry faster and also gets all the processing water out.

2012 07 24_1452_edited-1.JPG

I know you have seen our drying lines before so it’s nothing new, but here’s some anyway. I just love seeing the lines full of freshly dyed yarn and can’t resist the temptation to take pictures of it. So here you go. :-)

I should have a knitting progress report next time.

Summer dyeing has begun

I was able to get out to the dye studio yesterday. It was hot and humid, but hey, it’s July, that is to be expected after all. Here’s a few shots of what I got done. 2012 07 20_1417.JPG

These were all hand painted skeins and here they are in the wrappings in the pot after steaming. I left them in there overnight and took them out this morning to rinse, spin, and hang to dry.

I got a little progress done on the Sweet Tea mitts since last time. I just started the thumb gusset last night. I almost wish I had used 2.0mm needles for this. I guess the stitches will even out after a soak, but I feel like the 2.25mm are a little loose for this yarn in my knitting anyway. It’s the size Anne used so I just went with it.

I just love these wild violets that we get in our yard. I am glad I got this picture of them a couple days ago since after this the lawn was in need of mowing due to the rain and they are now sadly gone. Can you believe this is the first time we have had to mow since Memorial Day? Incredible. It’s certainly green out there now! :-)

Hello blog, did you miss me?

So sorry for the week long interruption in posts. We had another show this past weekend, the Hoosier Hills Fiber Festival in Franklin, IN. I regretfully neglected to get any pictures. In my defense I didn’t have a decent internet connection most of the time while we were there. The Wi-Fi at the hotel was abysmal and there was none at the Johnson Co. Fairgrounds anymore. I tried tethering my phone but the signal was being blocked by the building. I could sporadically get websites to load and emails to come through, but you could forget uploading pictures. Sigh.

Anyway we are back home now with REAL high speed internet. Bliss! We are actually going to be home for a whole two weeks! Of course we won’t be idle. We have a big order to dye this week. I got all the dyes mixed the last two days and got the yarn ready for dyeing today. We will probably be able to get all of it done in a day or two. 2012 06 05_1234.JPG

I can’t show you the color or tell you any details since it is for a club, but here’s the boatload of dye I mixed up.

2012 06 05_1237.JPG

I got a little sock knitting done, but to be honest I was itching for something different yesterday.

2012 06 05_1224.JPG

So…..I swatched for Sticks and Stones in my Classic Merino Sport with my new color Tiger Lily.  I am planning to do the vest version. I used #5 needles in pattern and am pretty close to gauge. You like? :-)

I thought this Rose of Sharon was looking especially pretty this morning. The picture doesn’t give you the full scale of it’s size. It’s probably about 12 feet tall, believe it or not.

Endings and beginnings

2012 03 30_0806.JPG

We got the last of the dyeing finished yesterday. We did 1,224 skeins in 5 days. The hand painted colors we did firs,t took two of those days even though we only did 256 of them. We can only get about a maximum of 125-140 of those done in a day due to the process. Semi solid colors, on the other hand, are a different process and we can get about 450 of those done in a day.

2012 03 30_0807.JPG

I plan to take the rest of the weekend off while we are waiting for the last day’s batches to dry. Monday we will start the sorting and labeling, which takes a considerable amount of time, as you may imagine. Fortunately, many hands make light work and this is an easy task to get even the younger ones to help with.

2012 03 30_0803.JPG

I have the task of “quality control manager”. I, or one of the adult assistants, (my oldest daughters) inspect each skein for neatness before they are labeled. I usually get the task of re-skeining any that are too snarled from the dyeing process. I have devised a system to reduce the likelihood of that necessity, but there are always a few, despite the measures. 2012 03 30_0810_edited-1.JPG

This last portion of the work is a big job, but I am always glad to get to this point, since at least all the really messy, sweaty part is done. Smile Sorting and labeling can be done sitting on the couch one box at a time, and so is not nearly as tiring. Not to mention the satisfaction of seeing the somewhat messy jumbles of yarn all over the place become neatly labeled and organized skeins that make you want to just wind one up and get out your needles. Winking smile

2012 03 30_0809_edited-1.JPG

Speaking of knitting, I fear I am becoming more and more disenchanted with my Gemini sweater. I didn’t care for some of the design construction and altered it. I could see that the way she had designed it the sleeves were going to be over 18” around and in the yarn I am using that was clearly not going to work well. So, instead of the increase rate of every row until a set amount of stitches were reached and then continuing until a certain length, I opted to decrease as for a standard raglan, every other round until the desired length.

My other reservation is my yarn choice. I bought it assuming that since it was labeled as a DK and looks a bit thinner than a worsted weight that it would get the 5.5 stitches to the inch I needed. To be fair, the label did recommend 5 stitches to the inch and even on a 5 and a 6 I got that gauge. I decided to alter the size I knit from to reach the desired size at the different gauge. The last couple of times I have half heartedly picked up my knitting I have that niggling feeling we knitters all recognize of a project gone bad. For some reason we continue on hoping it will get better, right? It will pass and when we are done we will like the thing. But, we lie to ourselves don’t we? We will toss it in a heap and be disgusted with it.

Don’t be surprised if the next time you hear of this it will be a frogging report. It’s not the design mind you. It’s a perfectly lovely sweater and I did want to make it. It’s me. Wrong yarn and all that. You understand.  Maybe I need a start a sock or that baby sweater I mentioned a few post ago.

Oh, I also finished the last book in the Outlander series yesterday, An Echo in the Bone. I was quite underwhelmed with the abrupt way in which it just stopped. All the sub plots were just dropped in a way that left me muttering to myself, “That’s it? Really, Just like that?” I mean I know there’s another book coming and all, but I don’t remember any of the others ending like this one did. It felt odd and I am not alone in my feelings. I took a look at the reviews and many others were similarly bothered by it. All I can say is the next installment had better be good, LOL!

My next read is the new Stephen King, 11/22/63. I read my first SK book when I was in 7th or 8th grade. It was Night Shift, which is a collection of short stories. I was hooked for life. I then read Carrie and Salem’s Lot, the later scared the crap out of me BTW. I have read almost everything the man has written, although I missed a few in the 90’s and while I own them on my Nook, haven’t gotten to them yet. They are in the queue. LOL! Even when I don’t care for the characters or what they say and do at times, he has a knack for making me know them and he brings them to life. That, and his commitment to the philosophy that the story is the important thing are, I believe, what draw me to his writing. I have a connection with it that not many authors can achieve. Anyway, I have only read the first chapter of this book last night, so nothing to comment on yet, but you will hear more later I am sure.

Okay, I will close for now. Have a great weekend!
