First up today; progress on the Spiral Effect Cowl is coming along nicely. I am on the 6th out of 8 repeats, and then just the edging to go.  I can see finishing this in the next couple of days I hope. So, the pattern should be available very soon.

As soon as this is off the needles I am itching to make up a little lacy scarf using some Classic Merino Lace in my new color Earthshine. I dyed up a skein last week when I was testing the new solids. I am thinking I will do one of Anne Hanson’s Little Nothings scarves; probably a Gust since it works nicely with a variegated color-way and the one I knit before is in a color-way we have discontinued.

2012 02 27_0567.JPG

Now speaking of the new colors; I have gotten quite a few great ideas for names from you and have narrowed it down to two choices for each color. So, just to refresh your memory here are the colors in several different base yarns.

First the green one:

2012 02 27_0562.JPG

Does it look more like Green Tea?

cup-of-green-tea

or Peridot?

peridot cut

peridot rough

And here’s the orange one, which you will notice, looks even more varied on different yarn bases.

2012 02 27_0566.JPG

The name choices are Tiger Lily or Nasturtium.

nasturtium.

The top two are Nasturtiums and the one below is a Tiger Lily.

I have devised a couple polls to get some feedback on the final choices. So cast your votes now. I will make a final decision and close the poll by my next post.

What should we call it?

I wish I was a faster knitter. I have gotten one repeat of the lace done on the Spiral Effect Cowl. Heather is waiting for me to finish test knitting before she officially publishes the pattern. I haven’t had any problems with the main stitch, so I just need to get the rest of those done so I can get on to the border design. I think there are 8 repeats of the main stitch pattern and each repeat is 10 rows. It’s not complicated and I would rate it as maybe advanced beginner lace. There is a double decrease and a marker shift, but nothing too difficult to tackle for a newer lace knitter. 2012 02 22_0530.JPG

I love the one she made in the variegated, but it looks equally great in a solid. This is one of those rare designs which work well in either a hand painted color-way or a semi-solid.

2012 02 22_0533.JPG

I got out in the  “dye studio” yesterday to work on a new color and this one is the winner. This is exactly the color I was going for and got it right on the first try. That is definitely not how it usually goes, LOL! It can take many tweaks sometimes to get the color just how I want it. As a matter of fact, I tried a couple ideas for a mauve-y type color and didn’t like any of those; so orange it is.  I am again open to name suggestions, so fire away. Naming colors is hard and frankly, the well is a little dry after so many years of doing this. LOL!

Well, the UPS man just delivered this while I am writing this post.

The 8 boxes of yarn that is. Not the baby, LOL! Better get to work.

Cowls and new colors

2012 02 20_0502.JPG

Here’s what I cast on yesterday after finishing the Sweet Tea Slouch, which we will get to in a minute. If you recall I mentioned that I am test knitting the Spiral Effect Cowl which Heather knit in one of my hand  painted variegated colors, Malignant Narcissism, so I decided to use a solid for mine.  This is one of the new colors we will be dyeing up soon. I just ordered 265 pounds of yarn today and when it arrives,  we will skein it all and start dyeing more yarn for the spring and early summer shows. We are planning to do one new hand painted variegated color and two semi-solids. I already have the variegated color-way planned, since it is one I used for a sock club a couple years ago. It’s called Earthshine. I am thinking that I will mix up a new orange or a purple for the other solid. The above green is as yet un-named. Feel free to offer suggestions.

sws earthshine

I am sending this test skein of Earthshine to Heather to work up a new design. We both seem to be on a cowl bender, since I keep knitting them and she said she has another idea for one. So, that’s the plan. I can’t wait to see her idea and to see this color-way knit up.

Now for the Sweet Tea scarf and hat set; I love the cowl and the hat is adorable, but I don’t think it is quite as cute on me as it is on my 6 year old. LOL! 2012 02 20_0524.JPG

Here she is wearing it. Adorable, right?

2012 02 20_0522.JPG

Here’s me. Meh. LOL!

2012 02 20_0511.JPG

I just have one of those faces/heads that don’t do hats well.

2012 02 20_0510.JPG

Here are some less interesting on the porch shots. The color frustrates my camera, even in neutral lighting. 2012 02 20_0505.JPG

The ones above where Emma is wearing them show the color more accurately, but still not exactly right. It is a much more red-violet color. Sigh. My camera hates saturated blues, reds, and purples.

2012 02 20_0504.JPG

I haven’t talked much lately about my music and reading, so how about an update? I am still working my way through the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon right now, as well as dipping in to my new Principles of Knitting, which is a book that I can highly recommend to every knitter. It is so packed full of information. I know, we have the internet now, and that is a valid point, but I am still a firm believer in having books too. It’s a great reference point for those times when don’t have access to the internet for whatever reason. Not to mention it’s fun to just read. Well I think so anyway.

I am up to the 5th book of the Outlander series, The Fiery Cross, and am about 60% of the way through it. I must say that thus far I liked the 3rd and 4th books the best because they stuck much more to the personal conflicts and there was less political events woven into the story. Due to the time period and setting there is, in the 5th book, the rumblings of the tax issues during the pre-American Revolutionary period, which gets tedious to me. I know that some people probably love that detail, but it doesn’t hold my interest as much. It does add some realism and depth to the plot, but I could do with less of it. The book is 1300+ pages, so maybe there could have been some more editing?

What am I listening to lately? I got the new Van Halen album when it came out last week. Anybody else? I was very skeptical when I heard the single Tattoo it when released. I was not instantly impressed and almost wrote off the album. But…when I heard the raves about the album, I had to see for myself. On first listen, I was not totally blown away, but it was certainly good and worth getting to know. It took several more times through to warm up to it. I am a firm believer in listening to albums in their context since the songs are meant to be played that way most of the time. As a whole this is some of the best material they have put out since the mid 80’s. I never liked the Sammy Hagar albums. The album that I am REALLY waiting for is the new Rush Album, Clockwork Angels, which is rumored to be released in May 2012. I can hardly wait!

Okay, I’ll close for now. See ya next time.

New designs to share

We had a warmer and sunnier day for the first time all week so we headed outside for a photo shoot of the new designs we have knit in my yarns. If you remember in my last post that I mentioned we have some new designs by my daughter Heather Alwood and you will find her patterns in our booth this coming year as well as  in her own Ravelry Store which is the official place to go if you prefer a download copy.

Spiral Effect.JPG

I showed you a sneak peak of the Spiral Effect Cowl, which was still un-named at the time. She will have a download link for you as soon as I finish my test knit of the pattern and it is ready to be published. I have a few better pictures to show you now though. Spiral Effect.JPG

Like the Spiral Effect Cowl, the Summer Showers Shawl is made from one skein of Classic Merino Superwash Sock yarn. She used the Winter Sky for this one.

Summer Showers Shawl.JPG

I like wearing it this way, like a scarf. But it’s sized nicely as a shawlette too.

Summer Showers Shawl.JPG

The Wings in Flight Shawl is also knit from the Superwash Sock but in the warm, French Marigold color.

Wings in Flight Shawlette.JPG

Wings in Flight.JPG

Again, this is my favorite way to wear this little shawlette. It’s perfect with a sweater for an accent, or to keep off the draft on a chilly day.

Wings in Flight.JPG

The Ode to the Butterfly Shawl has a whole different feel to it. It is light weight and delicate, with exquisite detail. I love it so much in the Classic Merino Lace, which has the most wonderful softness and stitch definition. Well you will see for yourself in the close ups I took.

Ode to the Butterfly.JPG

She used 3 skeins of Damson Plum, which is a deeper, more saturated color than the photos show. It is notoriously hard to get this color to display accurately in digital imaging. The shade is right, but deeper. Ode to the Butterfly shawl.JPG

Another thing I love about this shawl is the way it hangs when worn. It perches just right about the shoulders without constantly feeling like it is sliding off. It’s similar to the way a Faroese shawl fits, but it’s a triangle. Ode to the Butterfly.JPG

It is warm and cuddly despite it’s delicate look.

Ode to the Butterfly Shawl.JPG

See what I mean about the stitch definition?Ode to the Butterfly detail.JPG

The knitting is perfection too. I think she may be better than me, LOL!

Ode to the Butterfly detail.JPG

I am especially taken with the edging.

Okay this post is rather long so I will save my knitting updates for my next one. Go buy some patterns and cast on a shawl!

It finally happened

2012 02 14_0398_edited-1.JPG

Can you believe this is for real? What a great Valentine’s Day present! I received my copy today and literally squealed. LOL!

When I saw the revision up for pre-order on Amazon in March 2011 I didn’t even hesitate to reserve my copy. Now for those of you who may not know the history, this was an out of print book which is so legendary that the originals were going on eBay for obscene prices. There were rumors for years of a revised edition being published but it never materialized. Knowing all this, I placed my order with hope it would happen this time but not holding my breath, if you know what I mean. Well, it is finally a reality. I am looking forward to spending the evening thumbing through the pages. I bet this will become my new go-to reference book, and a nice companion to my trusty copy of Vogue Knitting.

Oh, look there! My Sweet Tea scarf is all done! I finished it in Pittsburgh. These loop scarves are certainly growing on me lately. I got it all washed up and blocked, but this is the best shot I could manage of it today. It was gray and drizzly all day.

I cast on last night for the matching Slouch Hat in hopes that it will work for me. Fingers crossed.

Speaking of bad weather and Pittsburgh…it did end up snowing all Saturday. Ugh! Am I the only one who thinks it is ironic that the ONE weekend I needed to be on the road during this mild and snow-free winter is the SAME weekend that winter decided to rear it’s ugly head? I think about 3-4” fell in Pittsburgh and it even snowed a little here in Nashville. It got VERY cold too, which was pretty miserable since we are not accustomed to it.

Despite all that we did have a lovely time at the festival, due to the good company and knitters who braved the elements to come out. Thank you!

We also decided to use the show to launch our new wholesale operation to any yarn shops who are interested in carrying our products. We are at this time accepting applications for new accounts on selected lines, which include all our hand dyed yarns and some of our tools. We aren’t quite ready for some of the tools to be available, but they may be in the somewhat near future. If you would like your local yarn shop to consider our products for their shop they can contact us for more details by email at catherine@knittingnotions.com

2012 02 14_0397_edited-1.JPG

Speaking of new; here is a sneak preview of a new designer whose patterns we will be carrying at festivals, who also happens to be my lovely and talented daughter, Heather Alwood of Alwood Design. This is a loop scarf that she designed using my Classic Merino Superwash Sock in the Malignant Narcissism color.  This arrived while I was in Pittsburgh and I love it so much that I wore it all day today. I will link you up and give you more details as soon as she has the pattern ready. I can’t wait to show you the other shawls she knit up for us, as soon as we get enough good light to do a proper photo shoot. They are so pretty!!

Okay that’s gonna have to tide you over for now. More details on my next post!

Pittsburgh Knit & Crochet Festival 2012

Yesterday began our annual trek to Pittsburgh for the Knit and Crochet Festival.  I look forward to this show each year for a couple of reasons. First, it comes at a time of year when we have had a long break and are eager to get back to work. Second, it is well organized and attended which makes everyone happy. It gets pretty busy on Saturday, which is always a good thing.  2012 02 09_0386.JPG

The fact that it is held around Valentine’s Day is both good and bad. It’s good because it comes during a slow sales period for us. On the other hand, it is bad due to the fact that we have to travel 580 miles and the weather can be pretty dicey.  Next year however it will be moving up to the third weekend in March. This should help with the weather issue. See, since I grew up in the southeast, I don’t have much experience driving in snow, and would rather not do it even around town at home. Add to that a long journey hauling a large trailer and it is terrifying to me. I have, through necessity, learned to do it, but I still hate it. It scares the crap out of me to be honest.

We saw a little light snow driving up yesterday, but the roads were clear and we made it without incident. There is some more light snow forecast here on Saturday and Sunday, but I think it will not be anything we can’t handle. We only have about a half a mile commute to the venue and our hotel has full kitchens which means no daily trek for food. We brought groceries and can cook simple stuff in the room, which beats fast food all week.

Here’s my work area and as you can see, I have made some progress on my scarf.  I have about an inch and a half to go before doing the other edging.  2012 02 09_0387.JPG

The color is more accurate on my monitor in the above picture.

Boys will be boys

So, my plan today was to write a long overdue blog post and show you my progress on my Sweet Tea Scarf. I gather up my knitting and my camera and head out to the front porch for some natural light. I turn on the camera….and nothing. The battery is dead. I think to myself, WTH? I haven’t used this in days. Why is the battery dead? I get out my phone to try and get a progress shot for you, but as you can see it is less than stellar.

Sweet tea infinity scarf

I will get you a better shot if I have time tomorrow, since there will be more packing to do tomorrow for our trip to Pittsburgh on Wednesday. I may even make some progress on it tonight, who knows?

So, I put the battery in the charger and decide to see what was on the memory card. It appears that my oldest son must have been in charge of the baby a couple days ago and was messing around outside. 2012 02 02_0334_edited-1.JPG

I was a little disturbed by the bare feet. I know it’s warm but it IS February! Of course the 15 year old in charge here was without a doubt similarly clad. Sigh.

Ah, the truck. His favorite outdoor toy, besides the basketball.

Heading to new adventure.

Hmm…what’s going on in here? I see some swifts in need of sanding.

2012 02 02_0359_edited-1.JPG

Let’s bring the truck in and load it up with sawdust, yeah that will be awesome!

Ah well, no worries. It all washes off at the end of the day.

You will be glad to know that no one caught pneumonia in the making of this blog post.

Almost Groundhog Day

2012 01 30_0282.JPG

Well that was fun. No, really it was. Don’t let my attempt at artsy self portraiture led you to the conclusion that I am anything but thrilled with it. 2012 01 30_0281.JPG

It was so fun in fact that I cast on right away for another infinity scarf; Mindy Wilke’s Sweet Tea2012 01 30_0262.JPG

Actually I plan to make the Slouch hat to match since I bought the set when she had a sale running on her blog recently.  I knew it would be perfect in my Classic Merino Sport and my hope is that this hat will be wearable on my silly little pea-head. I know I will love the scarf at least. 2012 01 30_0258.JPG

Back to the Pei; I took a pre-blocked picture 2012 01 29_0290.JPG

but it didn’t change tremendously afterwards other than the design opening up more and the edges smoothing out. It also softened some, but it wasn’t scratchy to me to begin with. 2012 01 30_0243.JPG

I like this yarn quite a bit and would use it again without hesitation. It would be great for a light weight sweater for spring.  I can see this as fingerless gloves too since it doesn’t look like it will pill too easily. 2012 01 30_0245.JPG

Remember a little while back we were talking about winter blahs? With Groundhog Day only a few days away, I am betting for the prediction of an early spring. We have had a very mild winter here in Middle Tennessee, albeit on the wet and gray side. We have had some nice sunny days since my birthday and we have been taking opportunities to get outside and do some neglected chores like washing the trucks, 2012 01 30_0266.JPG

and enjoying the daffodils. 2012 01 30_0264_edited-1.JPG

Yes, they are up and blooming about 5 weeks early. I hope the poor dears don’t get a blast of winter, like usually tends to happen when they bloom this early. We usually see their sweet faces by the first of March, but late January is early even for here. Is it too optimistic to hope that winter is really gone? Probably. But that won’t stop me.

That’s Meredith up there working on the lathe. She has been making our Shawl Pins for going on six years now, and has this year taken over the Darning Egg and Nostepinne production as well.  darning-egg-collage-1-28-12.jpg

She just finished some new eggs and is working on more Nostepinnes for Pittsburgh. Pretty huh? Smile

Let them eat cake

So, today is my birthday. We don’t make a big fuss in our house about them but we always make cake. The birthday person gets to pick what kind. I usually pick carrot cake. My favorite recipe is this one from King Arthur Flour.  2012 01 26_0211.JPG

The only modification I make is to leave out the pecans and press them into the frosting. I do that because a couple of people in our family object to them in the cake and my second son has peanut allergy. What I do is cut out a quarter of the cake and leave it plain and then add the nuts to the rest. 2012 01 26_0221.JPG

It is the best carrot cake recipe I know. Turns out perfect every time and even a less experienced baker would have no trouble with it.

2012 01 26_0225.JPG

What goodies did I get? Well, I treated myself a week or two back to a new pair of headphones that I have had my eye on for awhile. They are still in the “burn in” stage, but are totally awesome already. For the non-audiophiles out there, these are the highly regarded Sennheiser HD650’s. They are my constant companion whenever I am at my computer.  I am actually listening to some music with them as I am writing this post. You should hear what they do for a movie played from a Blu-Ray. It’s like being in a theater. 2012 01 26_0220.JPG

Another thing I recently got isn’t a birthday present but it DOES have to do with getting older, LOL! I finally conceded that I needed a pair of reading glasses, and man, does these help! Who knew? 2012 01 26_0212.JPG

I was working on the Pei Scarf and was on the rows with the nupps(hate those little buggers) and they were making me crazy! So, I got this CRAZY idea to put on the glasses. Whoa! Why didn’t I think of that earlier? I didn’t realize that some of the stress was because I COULDN’T SEE clearly where to position the needle to get those 5 stitches to knit together through the back loop. I still don’t love doing them, but it did help.

2012 01 26_0208.JPG

My oldest son took this shot of a squirrel raiding our bird feeder this morning.  I don’t really mind if they sneak a meal. I saw a couple blue birds and a titmouse feeding from it yesterday, so I guess they don’t mind sharing either.

2012 01 26_0203.JPG

So, what’s next?

2012 01 23_0202.JPG

So I finished the socks yesterday. They are a little wide for my ankles, but they will be fine, especially under my boots. I used almost all the yarn which is one of my favorite things about making toe up socks. I don’t know what took me so long to try them. Wait. Yes I do. I didn’t want the cast off to be the top. I was concerned about them being less stretchy. It’s not usually a problem for me as I found out when I finally gave it a try.  I have had to re-do a bind-off a time or two, but I use Jenny’s Surprisingly Stretchy bind off and that really does help.

Okay, so what to work on next? Fix the Sprossling maybe? Nah! Work on one of my other hibernating projects? Nope! How about something brand new and sparkly? Perfect! Okay it’s not actually sparkly, but you know what I mean.

2012 01 23_0200.JPG

Back in November of last year I saw Brooklyn Tweed’s new Loft when  Jared introduced it on his blog. I decided had to sample it and I ordered a skein and looked through the Loft Collection for a fun single skein project to use it on. I decided on the Pei Loop Scarf. It looked quick, fun, and easy to wear.

I cast on for it last night and worked the first 6 rows at which point  I realized I had reversed the decreases so that they weren’t facing each other as they were supposed to. Argh! I considered leaving it, since it didn’t look terrible or anything, just different than the design was written.  After a few curses, I knew it would bug me, so I  ripped back 4 rounds and reknit. It wasn’t too bad; especially since this woolen spun yarn is lofty and sticky which means the stitches don’t easily slip around when they are loose from the needles.

2012 01 23_0198.JPG

I love a nice woolen spun yarn and this one is yummy! They have a delicious color palette which makes me want to try a fair isle sweater out of it. Hmmm….
