Honeydew Lace Square

Honeydew-Lace-Square (11)

I don’t have too much time today for blogging but I did want to announce that I have the pattern for the Honeydew Lace Square available for purchase on my website and on Ravelry.

Honeydew-Lace-Square (12)

It was quite an adventure to design, knit, and write, and I hope anyone else who decides to take the dive will have fun with it. You can purchase the Classic Merino Lace on my website if you are so inclined. :-)

I am excited to be returning to Greencastle, IN tomorrow for The Fiber Event. It has been quite a few years since the last time I was able to vend there and the weather looked like it may even be warm, so that is something to look forward to also.  I will update you on my current knitting projects in my next post. I have got some packing to do. :-)

Home again

I arrived back home from Connecticut safely, after another two day long drive. I saw much snow on the ground all along the way, even as far south as Wytheville, Virginia. When I was maybe 50-75 miles from Bristol, the state line into Tennessee, it began to look like spring at last. Now home in Nashville, for the last three days, I am enjoying seeing grass and trees budding. We have still got so much rain that every thing is pretty soggy, but at least it’s not cold. I did have to turn on the heat last night because the overnight temperature dipped into the 40’s, but we have had some windows open, up until then. I am afraid I will once again see wintery weather when I am in Pittsburgh next weekend for the Pittsburgh Creative Arts Festival. I am hopeful that it may be warm, as it was last year, but I will be packing sweaters, scarves, and gloves just in case. :-)

I am spending my week at home enjoying my family, and catching up on dozens of business related tasks. At the top of my list, with hopes to have it ready for next weekend, is the pattern for the new lace square shawl. I have begun work on it and have got the pattern basically written as far as the overview and procedural steps. I just need to finish up the charts and insert them and it will be ready to publish. I still have as a working title for it, Honeydew Lace Square, which I know is kind of boring, but I am putting all my energy into writing and will hopefully come up with something better later. I did get a few good suggestions which I will take into consideration at that point.

I was very pleasantly surprised that there were so many people who liked and wanted to make it. Quite a few actually went as far as to buy the 7 skeins of Classic Merino Lace required to make it, even with the pattern not written yet. But no pressure right? LOL! Many knitters have also emailed asking for it, so yeah, I feel obligated to make it a priority now. :-) Thank you to all who have encouraged me to finish it.

In addition to all the family and business stuff, I have managed to make some progress on my two knitting projects I have going. Here’s the progress on Carolan. It is looking pretty good, I think.

And here is Tiriltunge, which I work on when I don’t want to be bothered with referring to a chart.

Final Preparations

Mimi-lightbox (1)

I don’t know who coined the phrase about curiosity killing the cat, but Mimi has got to be the most curious cat I have ever seen. If any thing is going on, at all, she is right in the middle of it, as the above shows so elegantly.  Nothing gets past her, LOL!

yarnbox2018 (1)

She graciously helped me on my photo shoot for the website a couple days ago. I now have the new stock of Mahogany and Walnut Yarn Boxes available on the website. I will have some of these and some Maple ones as well, in my booths at MKG Knit-In this coming weekend and at Stitches United the following weekend. I am madly doing last minute tasks and packing today, since I am headed out to Wisconsin in the morning.

I had hoped to get my shawl blocked in time but I am not sure that’s gonna happen today. If it does I will be sure and take a shot of it and post it in my next post. I do however have new interim project on the needles before I cast on for another sample. It is Tiriltunge and is going pretty fast so far.

It will be for one of the new granddaughters, I suppose. Mostly it looked like a fun change of pace and a cute, quick knit. I may end up making two. My oldest daughter had her second baby this past week and my third daughter is due with her second in early May, both girl babies.  Here’s a picture of the latest new little one, Veda. :-)

This is her very proud big brother, Gabriel. He is so far the lone grandson. :-)

Okay, I will see you from the frozen north soon.

Almost There

YarnBox-production2018 (1)

We put in a couple more long days in the wood shop and have a batch of 70 Mahogany and Walnut Yarn Boxes completed. I will be adding them to the website within a few days, as soon as they have the finish dry so I can photograph them. We have 114 more ready to be assembled and completed as soon as we can get to them, but hopefully these will carry us until that time. They will most likely be postponed a bit while we make a batch of Yarn Swifts first.

This is how they looked yesterday before we put on the finish.

YarnBox-production2018 (2)

YarnBox-production2018 (4)

They are currently waiting for the finish to cure, then I will label them and pack some in the trailer for our opening round of fiber festivals next week and the following week; Madison Knitting Guild Knit-In and Stitches United.

I am very excited to announce that my Honeydew Shawl (working title but not sure if it will stick) is off the needles! It’s not blocked yet and I have some ends to weave in, but here’s the preview shot.

honeydewshawl (1)

I am not sure if I can manage getting the pattern written up before I leave for Knit-In on Thursday. I need to have someone proof my charts and stuff. I will let you know when it’s up on Ravelry and the website. What do you think of the name? I admittedly haven’t put too much effort into the name thus far. I was seriously wondering if it would ever be finished, LOL! The name comes from the color of the yarn I used. I could go for something that reflects the stitch patterns I guess. Is there a recognizable theme there? Not sure.

So, I have absolutely nothing on the needles right now. There are a few samples I could start. More on that when I decide. I’ll probably just take the night off, LOL!

Before I close, Jerry and I celebrated with a well earned night out last night. We randomly picked the Bavarian Bierhaus and had a fantastic time. Great food, excellent beer, and a live band! I highly recommend it.

Making Progress

20180305_125140

I am ridiculously excited that this is all I have left on my Honeydew square shawl! I should have it done in another evening or two.

The Yarn Boxes are coming along too. We have started the assembly/glue up this weekend.

YarnBoxesproduction2018 (2)YarnBoxesproduction2018 (7)YarnBoxesproduction2018 (3)YarnBoxesproduction2018 (6)

This is only about a third of them so far. The plan is to complete these so I have some to take with my to the Madison Knit-In and Stitches United. Then we will finish the remaining ones when I get back.

YarnBoxesproduction2018 (1)YarnBoxesproduction2018 (8)

We have started the exterior sanding today and will get the lids sized and sanded. Then they just need the sealer and labeling. Doesn’t sound like a lot but it takes longer than it sounds. :-)

I know, it’s been awhile….

Well, here I am again after a shockingly long hiatus. I saw Needlefingers catch up post yesterday and was inspired to dust off my blog and get back to writing. I like to keep this little record for some of the same reasons Kristi stated. It’s a good way to refresh my memory of what happened when. That gets increasingly helpful at my age, LOL. Also it’s a good way to share with interested parties what’s happening with the business and my knitting. Sure, I can and do use Ravelry to record knitting projects, but sometimes, like now actually, when I am working on a design of my own that I plan to publish the pattern for, I tend to wait until it’s published to post it there.

Which leads nicely into what is on my needles anyway? Well I started this current project around the end of July I think, after I finished my Sprossling in Classic Merino Superwash Sock yarn.

SMW-2017 (2)

I had this idea to design a Shetland style lace square, but with some modifications on the traditional model. I wanted to make it using my one of my newer colors, Honeydew, in Classic Merino Lace. Time for a picture, yes?

LaceSquaredesignSummer2017

I picked out a lace pattern from Barbara Walters Treasury and tried swatching from the written directions just to see if I wanted to pursue it. I got about eight rows into a thirty-two row repeat and gave up on that idea. I could see I was never going to make it through the swatch without a chart. So I then spent several hours charting the design and got back to my swatch. I liked it and calculated by gauge how many stitches to cast on and got started. This picture above is taken about a month after I cast on and before I started the border.

What I did that was different from traditional lace squares, AFAIK, is work my center square from one end to the other rather than on the diagonal. I realized after awhile of knitting that I could see the wisdom in the diagonal square for actually producing a square. In order to make the stitch pattern come out even mine is slightly taller than it is wide. I didn’t want to be work mine diagonally because of the pattern direction. I proceeded hoping for the best. :-)

HoneydewLaceShawl (2)

Finally I reached to point of picking a border design, and went with an Ostrich Plume. By the time I had done one repeat of that I had well over 1000 stitches on the needles I think and decided that was quite enough and time to pick an edging. At this point I and on the final side, having passed the third corner this weekend, and heading to the finish line.

I am not completely sure how big this thing is but I am on the seventh skein of yarn, heh heh. Is anyone going to want to make this? LOL! We shall see, but it is pretty impressive if size counts for anything. This has been my exclusive knitting except for a quick foray into baby sweater knitting around Christmas and New Years for some of the grandbabies.

We are also hard at work in the woodshop this winter/spring making a huge, and I do mean huge, batch of mahogany and walnut boxes. We are finally to the sanding stage. We have to sand all the insides of the box pieces before we do the glue up/assembly, which is to come next.

Oh, I told you back in June how we had gotten a couple guinea pigs, right? Well in September we added a kitten to the mix. Here’s Mimi. :-) She was rescued from someones car engine and we adopted her. She was around 7-9 weeks old I think when we got her which makes her around 7-8 months now.  The top picture is from October 2017 and the bottom one was taken last week.

Okay, I’ll close for now and see you soon. Thanks for reading!

Still Here..

Good morning blog. I know it has been ages and once again I beg your pardon. Since my last post from Virginia the end of September, it is now the end of another very hectic month.

I arrived home after the Fall Fiber Festival at Montpelier on October the 3rd and hit the ground running. New Era Fiber Mill has kept me super busy dyeing for them with large orders every week. In addition to that, I had a big batch of new Yarn Boxes in cherry and walnut ready for finish and then to be photographed and added to the website. Some of my yarn inventory also needed replenished (which is a good problem to have Smile) so there was yet more dyeing to be done.

Now if that isn’t enough for you, we also had the pleasure of hosting my oldest daughter Alicia’s wedding to Aaron Brown at our home. It was outdoors; a small immediate family affair. All of my children and grandchildren were in attendance except for Meredith and Luke, who were sorely missed. It was wonderful to have everyone together again for a brief reunion. My second oldest daughter, Heather, with Garrod and the three little girls stayed at our house. Oh, and Honey, their sweet doggie, came along as well, much to Emma’s delight. I wish I had thought to get some pictures of those two together because Emma enjoyed Honey’s visit very much.

Anyway, it was a thrown together rather last minute, and went off surprisingly well. Open-mouthed smile I am very happy that they came to Nashville so that we could all be a witness to what will surely be a blessed union.

Here’s a few of my favorite pictures that Heather and I took over the weekend.

I am in Asheville, NC this weekend for SAFF and from here I proceed to Minneapolis, MN for my first Vogue Knitting event. I will make more of an effort to update much sooner next time and fill you in on my travels this week and my recent knitting, not that there has been much of that lately. Open-mouthed smile

Sock Knitting and New Yarn

All the yarn is labeled and loaded in the trailer for the fall show season. I spent a couple days getting the new yarn colors, Paprika and Peacock, on the website and also marking down to 50% off, the discontinued colors, Azure and Pumpkin Spice.  You can find these within the product pages for each yarn base. Sale prices are good while supply lasts!

Also I am still knitting on my sock. I am quite enjoying it since it has been I have no idea how long since I made a pair of socks.

20160723_114026

I will probably start a new shawl next in one of the new colors. Dee O’Keefe has two new designs I am itching to make, Mayuri and Talise. I also have another grandbaby on the way in the fall who will need some warm knitted things, so that will be in the works soon too.

Bocce Shawl Kits

Feb.2016-promos (6)

I am busily tying up loose ends on my preparations for the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival so this will be a brief post. I mainly wanted to make an announcement that I have completed putting together the Bocce Shawl Kits

Feb.2016-promos (7)

These will be making their debut at the show but they are also available to order on the website.

This was a very fun project to make. It was simple to do, but the color changes just enough to make it interesting. It is such a wearable shawl too. I have worn it several times as a scarf. I got plenty of compliments on it at the grocery store. Smile

Bocce-Shawl-kit (11)

Well, I must get back to work so I will close for now. See you soon!

Preparations

20151211_160738

I know its been several weeks since my last post and I am sorry about that but we have had a lot going on here.

20151211_160717

You may recall the yarn boxes we made a few of and took to SAFF last month? Well we sold most of them and have been working on some more.

20151211_160828

We have a batch of boxes made in Maple that are finished and I am in the process of getting them added to the website today.

IMG_2004

We did add one new improvement from the proto type. We put a tiny magnet at the back of the lid and box to hold the lid in place a bit.

IMG_2003

I will let you know when they are on the website but if you simply must have one in the mean time feel free to email me and I can set you up. Smile

IMG_2000

I have also been getting a fair bit of knitting done in between cooking, shopping and business work. I am on chart 5 of 7 on the Iolanthe Shawl.

IMG_1999

It is an interesting knit because of the variety of stitches used and you move through the charts pretty quickly. I am enjoying it. Oh and I didn’t get around to casting on for the other shawl yet because I have also been diverted by some Christmas knitting.

IMG_1997

IMG_1980

I am not in the habit of doing a lot of Christmas knitting but I did have a request for one thing and what knitter can resist that I ask you?

20151207_121335

Well that request reminded me of some other things I meant to make and I knocked out a few more hats and a cowl that I don’t have a picture of. Maybe I can get the recipient to model it on Christmas. I hesitated to post even these pictures for fear it will be obvious who these are for. Oh and because someone will ask, here’s the link for the Star Wars hat on Ravelry. You are welcome. Smile
