Under the weather

I know it’s been a little longer than I expected it would be since my last post. This is due partly to the fact that I have been under the weather since before Thanksgiving. Which leads to the other reason for my delay; lack of content. Knitting progress has been slower than I would have liked but more on that in a minute.

What started out on late Tuesday as a minor breast infection, which for all of you who have breastfed know is common and easily dealt with occurrence, at least IME, progressed to something else altogether. On Wednesday and Thursday I had a low grade fever and symptoms of the afore mentioned breast infection. By Thursday night that was clearing up and my temp was back to close to normal. As Friday wore on though I started to get a weird swollen feeling in my throat. I figured it was my lymph nodes from the infection, until I lost my voice. My temperature went back up for the next 4 days and the upper respiratory symptoms worsened. My temperature was down some finally today but not totally back to normal. I have an annoying cough and still can barely talk. That is really frustrated I can tell you. I was really beginning to get concerned about the fever going on so long. I hate taking antibiotics unless they are absolutely necessary. I also avoid going to doctors if at all possible, but I knew I was going to have to go soon if my fever didn’t break. Hopefully I am on the mend now and it will continue to clear up on it’s own. I have been using vitamin C, zinc, and Echinacea to help boost my own immune system.

Well anyway that’s enough about that, I am sure I will be fine. On to the Sprossling update. I finished the knitting yesterday. I apologize for the pictures since I was forced to take indoor shots last night and this morning, but I figured they would be better than nothing for now.

I soaked and got the sleeve blocking while I set to work seaming the left side last night. By about 9:00 pm the sleeve was dry enough and I got it set in too before quitting for the night. So all that is left to do is the arm and side seaming on the right side, as well as buying and sewing on buttons, and it will be finished!

I am very pleased with it. The next post will most surely be of a completed Sprossling. Yay!

2012 11 28_2330.JPG

On a sad note; I was very grieved to hear of the sudden passing of Karrie AKA knitpurlgurl. I met her several years ago at the Pittsburgh Knit & Crochet Festival and have followed her blog ever since. She always stopped in my booth and was very friendly. I guess we are always taken aback when one so young and full of life, with a young family to raise especially, is taken so suddenly. My prayers go out to her family and friends. I saw on her Ravelry group that they are doing a little something for the family if you are inclined to help out.

Take care friends. Until next time.

It’s starting to look like a sweater

My Sprossling is really coming along splendidly. I am so glad I picked this back up to finish. It is long overdue and I can’t wait to wear it!

I finished the first sleeve, got it washed and blocked, and wound a new skein to cast on the second sleeve. Before I started to work on that second skein however, I decided to go ahead and seam the shoulders and work the edgings.

2012 11 19_2326.JPG

My main reason for doing that is because I had a small amount of yarn left from the sleeve and rather than have to start with that on the second sleeve and running into the necessity of splicing on a new skein, I could just use it for the edgings and use a new skein for the second sleeve. I hate to waste yarn, especially hand dyed yarn, so this way seemed most efficient to me. Working the edges used up almost the whole ball nicely.

2012 11 19_2328.JPG

It looks as if it will only take 4 skeins of the 5 I had set aside for this project. I guess that does make sense though. The yardage required for the size 38” is 1400 yards. My Classic Merino Superwash Sport has 340 yards per skein so doing the math results in 4.11 skeins being needed, which is why I had reserved 5 skeins. I will most definitely not need the 5th skein.

My row gauge tends to be compressed more than it was on this sweater for some reason, which is probably what is causing me to use slightly less yarn. I re-measured the gauge in the blocked pieces and the stitch is gauge is about right but the row gauge is a row or two short. In pattern it should be 38 rows in 4” but mine is more like 36 or 37 at most. Maybe it’s because I am using a sport weight rather than a fingering weight?

I will hopefully be done with the sleeve and possibly even have it seamed within the week. Wish me luck!

My brief commentary on War and Peace

War and PeaceWar and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What to say about such a well known and revered work such as this? I hardly feel qualified for the task.

What I will say is that I am very glad that I finally got around to reading it. It took me almost 11 weeks to accomplish, but it was worth the time spent. I greatly enjoyed learning to know the characters and following their lives. There are many happy points as well as tragic ones, but such is life.

I admit that I skimmed and even skipped the very last section where he was waxing philosophical about war, nations and society. Maybe I will return to it another day but I was not into right now. I liked to read the thoughts of the characters when they mused but this was more narrative in nature and I was not in the mood for it.

All in all this is a classic for good reason.

Almost there..

Here’s my latest progress on my Sprossling. The knitting of this sweater is truly a breeze once you get going on it. I can’t wait to see it finished.

I finished the body pieces and am almost done with the first sleeve. I had a few hours on Saturday afternoon that I could devote to knitting so I put on my audiobook and got a good bit of the sleeve done that day.

It’s amazing how much progress you can make even on size 4 needles, when you can work all at once like that. It is rare that I can do that so it was quite a treat for me. :-) I even finished my audiobook, which was Ken Follett’s Winter of the World.

It was pretty good. If you read the first of the series, The Fall of Giants, you won’t want to miss this one. It picks up with most of the characters from that book a decade or so later. The story mostly focuses on the next generation but most of the previous generation is still around and they are active in this book still. I found the historical aspects of it interesting and liked following the storylines of the families as they intertwined with each other.

I am almost finished with War and Peace too. I am so glad I finally got around to reading this. I have no idea why I had a hard time getting into it the first time I tried. It is a very readable and enjoyable story for most of the time. The characters are compelling and that is what I love in a book. I have been touched many times at the circumstances some of the characters find themselves in. The “war” parts can be a bit tedious at times. They aren’t all that way though. Actually there is even quite a bit of thought provoking prose in there to add variety to the work. I haven’t found myself getting bored at any point at all. so challenge yourself if you haven’t tackled this book yet. It is a rewarding read and you can have bragging rights when you are done. :-)

Sticks and Stones

I have been meaning to write this post for a few days and I am finally getting it done. I finished my Sticks and Stones vest on Tuesday. According to my Ravelry notebook that means it took me just over three months to knit it, but I did complete the Twig and Leaf during that time period as well so it’s not really too bad. Well for me anyway.

2012 11 09_2306.JPG

My lovely daughter Meredith consented to model for me. She can really pull off a vest can’t she?

2012 11 09_2298.JPG

I don’t know about you, but I think vests are a great addition to the wardrobe. They are perfect for layering in colder weather and perfect for adding warmth when a full sweater with sleeves would be more than you need. I really like the way the easy but interesting stitch pattern and textural interest to the fabric and the cables frame and add structure.

2012 11 09_2317.JPG

The other thing I love about it is that it is written for sport weight yarn which I have found is my preferred weight now. I like my sport weight sweaters and wear them way more than my heavier worsted weight ones. They don’t really take me any longer to knit either even though you would think they would. They add just as much warmth but none of the heaviness and bulk. If you have been “scared of little needles” for sweaters, please just trust me. Try it and you will not go back. What I would like to try too is a feather weight cardigan in my Classic Merino Lace. I bet that would be so comfortable to wear. Now what pattern and color? hmmm

Well, I am not starting that until I finish my poor neglected Sprossling. I picked that back up the other night and am almost finished with the second front piece which means I will be casting on for the sleeves very soon. Wow, I just looked to see when I cast on for this project and it was January 2011. Shame on me. It’s time to get this in the wardrobe don’t you think?

Late Fall Musings and Goals

My Sticks and Stones vest is off the needles! It seems like it is so close to being finished at this point until you remember that the seaming and edging take a fair bit of time to accomplish.

We made it out of Asheville on Monday morning in chilly and windy weather, but ahead of the storms. It was blustery on Sunday too, which made booth load up a bit unpleasant but we made it out in a surprisingly short time considering the circumstances. The wind was the worst factor. It kept knocking stuff over and blowing the tent flaps we were parked next to against the truck and trailer. At one point we just stopped loading, moved the cargo and pulled to a different spot. That helped a lot.

Anyway, from what I saw on the weather the area we were in got some snow which I am so glad we missed. Long time readers on here will already know who much I dislike cold and snow in particular. Yuck.

Here is a shot I took of how the mountain pass traveling in from east Tennessee into North Carolina on I-40 looked on Thursday before all the “weather” blew in.

Asheville falll 2012

It was mid to upper 70’s for the first part of the weekend but turned chilly on Saturday and Sunday. The show was pretty busy and we did very well in sales. Thanks to everyone who came out to support the show and the vendors. You have no idea how much we who make a living from the work of our hands appreciate that.

The show season is winding down for the winter for us. We have one more event this year in early December in Hot Springs, Arkansas. It is the Arkansas Fiber Arts Extravaganza which I just came across earlier this year. This will be our first year there.

While my knitting progress has been slow I have been getting some reading done. I am still reading War and Peace and listening/reading to Winter of the World. I am past the halfway point in both of these books. I am enjoying them both but I have to tell you that it is a challenge at times keeping my brain engaged in two different time periods of wars involving many of the same nations. LOL!

I have a schedule of things I want to read before the end of the year in preparation for a re-read of The Lord of the Rings beginning January 1. As soon as I finish the two current books I plan to re-read The Passage prior to reading the second installment The Twelve. I am really looking forward to these. I liked The Passage a lot and am excited to get to the next book. After these I have several short books I want to read before a re-read of The Hobbit. There are a couple Stephen King/Joe Hill novellas namely, In the Tall Grass and Thumbprint, and after them I have been itching to read Clockwork Angels which is an expansion on the concepts and lyrics from the new Rush album from this year of the same name. I know. Sounds totally geeky and weird right? It has gotten some pretty good reviews though. I think you have to be a Rush fan to care though, LOL!

Well I will leave you with a last glimpse of the fall colors outside my window. They will most likely be gone within a week.

Fall colors

Sticks and Stones progress shot from today. I am only a few inches away from the armhole bind off in the second front piece. The color is just right for this time of year and a vest is also just right for fall days when there is just a little chill but not quite enough for a sweater. I can’t wait to wear this!

2012 10 24_2286.JPG

It’s been in the low eighties this week and sunny but it will be cooling off by the weekend again. I wish I was going to have this done for SAFF this weekend, but I think that is not going to happen. I will have a few hours to knit tonight possibly but since I leave in the morning and it will be a full day of driving and booth set up it’s not likely I will even finish this piece much less knit the edging and seam it. I will take along the finished pieces just in case though. I can dream can’t I?

fall colors

The fall colors are already past their peak which is unusual for this early. I took a few shots last week fortunately of the trees before they started shedding.

I love the rusty orange color of these on the ground too.

Kind of looks like the color of my vest doesn’t it?

2012 10 24_2290.JPG

Ian got some new glasses this week. It’s hard to see in this picture but they are a cool green color in the inside and a nice navy on the front. He picked them himself, and no I didn’t talk him into the green ones at all. Really. :-)

Okay I took one of just the glasses to show you.

Bye for now. We’ll see you in Asheville!

In other news I got back to work on my Sticks and Stones vest. Here’s a peek at that.

Twig and Leaf

I was knitting on my Twig and Leaf last night while watching an episode of War and Peace and I was so close to the end, I was determined to finish it. Well I made it to the end but I saved the bind off for this morning. It is almost 470 stitches and I was not in the mood to do that at 11:00pm. Oh, and that series of War and Peace, while it’s film quality is showing it’s age, is pretty true to the book and I am watching it as I read along. It has 25 hour long episodes and a guide book so you get a summary of what part of the book is in each episode. I am quite a bit ahead in my reading of where I am in the series. It is a nice supplement and gives me something interesting to watch while I knit.

2012 10 16_2266_edited-1.JPG

So anyway, this morning while I was having my coffee and checking email I got the shawl bound off and took it out for a few pictures before I soaked and blocked it so you could see the transformation.

2012 10 16_2274.JPG

It isn’t actually that drastically different because I prefer to leave a bit of “texture” in my knitting. I am not an aggressive blocker.

2012 10 16_2276.JPG

I really love how this came out and I could see making this again sometime in a darker more dramatic color or maybe even a subtle variegated color way. The pattern was of course impeccably written and I feel like it is a good project for a beginning lace knitter to cut their teeth on. It has just enough difficulty in the short row section to make it interesting but not frustrating. The lace was not too difficult and I found I hardly needed to look at the chart once I got going on it. It is not nearly as difficult as it looks. But let that be your little secret if you want to impress your non-knitting friends, LOL!

It is starting to look like fall a bit early here in Tennessee. When we were in northern Virginia it was starting to show some colors too, but when we left Nashville for VA the leaves were still all green. This is what they look like in my yard today.

Quickie post

Sorry for such a long time with no posts lately. I will try to get a more detailed update in a few days.

The last week I have been catching up on things after being on the road for two weeks. The last of my major tasks on my  list was done this afternoon and since it was a warm day I went outside to take a a well earned break of reading.

I decided to try posting from my new Samsung Galaxy S III. Awesome phone. :)

Hope you have a great weekend!
