News From Virginia and Our Home Upgrades

kitchen island

In my previous post I promised to share some of our home upgrades we did. I also bring news from my Virginia trip.

Virginia

I left Nashville on Wednesday. I drove to about the halfway point, which is Abington, VA, and stopped for the night. I drove through torrential rain for about the last 100 miles in East Tennessee. It rained all night in Abington and through the first 100 miles on Thursday in southwest Virginia. By the time I got north of Roanoke it was behind me. I arrived at my hotel in Winchester and got settled in for the week. I went to do some grocery shopping.

Friday was set up day at the Shenandoah Valley Fiber Festival. too. It was lightly raining here by then but nothing too bad. I got a few pictures that show my new booth fixtures better than the tent ones from last weekend.

The weather on Saturday was quite nice, surprisingly, especially considering what was going on in the rest of the southeast. Nashville got about 5″ of rain but our home and family had no problems. I am grateful for that but my heart does break for the devastation to so much of the region . :-( Sunday was a little wet again but nothing problematic. The festival turnout was good and I believe the vendors mostly had good sales.

I have four days as a break here while I await traveling the short distance to Orange, Virginia on Friday for the Fall Fiber Festival. I am mostly hanging out at the hotel. I have sent out a few orders, done some knitting and reading, and a bit of book shopping on Monday.

Knitting

I know I said I was going to work on the Veritas Shawl, but that hasn’t happened yet. I was more in the mood to knit something simple, so I cast on a new pair of Hedgerow Socks. I made these before in 2009. Those were gifted, so these will be for me. I have picked out some yarn for new samples but since I haven’t wound or cast on for those yet, I’ll report when I do.

Home Upgrades

Finally, I want to share some of the lovely home improvements that we (mostly Jerry, to be fair) have done.

It started with this HVAC vent that Jerry installed in our main bathroom. We should have done this decades ago. When we bought this house in 1998, there was a crappy attempt to vent the heat and air to the bathroom under the vanity. It was a terrible idea. It wreaked havoc on the contents in the drawers. Jerry removed it and blocked off the hose. The bathroom was poorly ventilated though and would retain moisture. Finally he decided to try installing a proper vent in the floor. It has made a big improvement!

bathroom air vent

The next thing we did was to install a ceiling fan in our bedroom. Oh my! I love that thing! I no longer have to run my noisy little bedside fan. The next day we went out and bought four more fans to install in the den, second bedroom, my office and the kitchen. It is so nice to have air circulating throughout the house. We run them 24/7 on low and I turn the one over my bed up to medium or high at night.

While I was in Wisconsin, Jerry decided to tackle installing one in the living room. The only reason we weren’t initially planning to that is because it required installing a new box. The overhead in our living room is on the side of the room, over the dining area and we wanted the ceiling fan in the center where we sit. He did a wonderful job and now it looks like it was always there!

The final upgrade was in the kitchen. We built an island/work table and a small shelf near the stove. I had always been leery of this idea because, while I like the idea of more workspace, I feared it would clutter our somewhat small kitchen. This is the lovely thing that he came up with and I do love it! I am probably going to get some nice canisters and store my baking supplies on the bottom shelf. I am off to do some looking around to that end. See you again soon!

All in a Week’s Work

padauk shawl and hair sticks

Around here we are rarely idle. It’s hard to home educate and run a home based business any other way. It’s all in a week’s work most of the time. We do try to set aside one day a week for rest. This week has been filled with a variety of tasks.

Miscellaneous Stuff

I’ll start off with the news that my new phone and computer arrived. I took the picture with the phone so no shot of that. The new laptop is a nice upgrade, especially the 2.8K screen. I love my new S24 Ultra too. Jerry got my S22 Ultra.

Since the weather finally turned warm and dry, it was time to get the storage shed painted. The tornado damaged the roof and that was fixed right after Christmas. After that the weather prevented us from getting the painting done until this week.

Dyeing and Wood Finishing

While the guys were painting the shed, I was doing some wood product finishing and yarn dyeing.

The Shawl and Hair Sticks that we have been making are ready for the final steps. I applied the finish to them on Thursday. They need a day or two to dry and cure before packaging. I am so pleased with how the new Padauk ones look. I have them listed on the website. I still need to get pictures of the Padauk added this week, but they are available.

The yarn that you see up there is a custom order for a local percussion supply business. They use the yarn as a part of mallets for percussion instruments. I got this dyed on Saturday and wound it into balls for them yesterday.

Labeling and Packaging

In between these tasks, I got the labels ready to package the new Shawl and Hair Sticks. I have gotten some of them packaged but I still have the Purple Heart and Padauk ones to go after I finish writing this post.

Knitting

To round out my post I will update you on what I am knitting at the moment.

The top down raglan sweater is a large size Classic Baby Cardigan for a booth sample. I am using the Earl Grey and Garnet Classic Merino Superwash Sport yarn. I should have enough of the Earl Grey to knit the body and sleeves. I may add some Garnet to the ribbing if needed.

The middle picture is a Spiral Effect Cowl for the booth in my Classic Merino Superwash Sock in Heather. I introduced this one in my last post. My update is that I am currently almost at the halfway point.

The third project is Stephen West’s Spiral Splash Socks from the Year of Socks 2024 collection. I am late casting this on, since it was the January release. I did at least start them on January 27th.

I am excited to make the February ones so I am going to try and speed through at least the first one so I can start the current month pattern soon. I’ll talk about that when I get there.

Happy Birthday and Miscellaneous Updates

coconut cake

Birthday Celebrations

Happy Birthday to me! We celebrated today with a delicious meal of homemade pasta with chicken fricassee. I made a coconut cake for my birthday cake. It is the first one I have made and it was delicious! I apologize that I neglected to take a picture of the main dish. It was worth every bit of effort. I love fresh pasta! The chicken and pasta recipes are from my Joy of Cooking, which is my staple cookbook.

New Electronics

I recently pre-ordered the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. This was mainly a business purchase but I was excited when it shipped early and was supposed to be delivered today. That seemed like a fun birthday surprise, right? Unfortunately, there was a delay in delivery though. So it hasn’t shown up yet, which is a bit of a disappointment.

On a related note, I also ordered a new laptop this week. This was something I planned to do this year, but was waiting until spring. I have had my current computer since August 2018. It is a Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 6 and has been the best laptop I have ever had. I wanted to get the new model (gen 12) and build it to the specs I want. Those plans had to change when I turned on my computer three days ago to this…

I had no warning that anything was going bad. It was fine until it wasn’t.

Those white vertical areas aren’t supposed to be there. You can also see that the text is virtually illegible. I wasn’t sure whether this was a hardware failure of the display or the integrated graphics processor. We have a external monitor which I set up in my office. I hooked up the computer to it with an HDMI cable to see what would happen.

external monitor

That worked! I assume that means that the display is the problem. So, while I can still use my computer now when hooked up to the external monitor, I still need to replace it for use on the road.

So, waiting until March wasn’t going to be an option anymore. I went ahead and built a gen 11 model. It was supposed to arrive February 1 at the earliest and probably a few days later than that. I was pleasantly surprised to get the shipping notification this morning and it is currently expecting to be delivered January 29th. So, that’s good news!

Knitting Updates

In other news, I have another finished sample to show you today and a new one on the needles.

Here is my Maize Cowl washed and ready to wear. I have a Ravelry project page for it too. You can get further information there if you like.

I made a trip to Joann and got some buttons for the small size Classic Baby Cardigan that I finished last week. When I was knitting this, I saw that the pattern could use some updating for clarity. So, I did some editing and uploaded the revised edition to my website and my listing on Ravelry.

There is only one project on my needles at the moment. I may cast on something else soon, but this is it for now. It is another booth sample re-knit of the Spiral Effect Cowl. My daughter, Heather, is the designer of this pattern. She wrote it for my Classic Merino Superwash Sock yarn about 12 years ago. She was selling it online from Ravelry and I sell it at festivals. I have made it several times and I enjoy wearing mine when I want a little something lacy to wear.

spiral effect cowl

It is a quick and fun lacy project that is perfect for even the knitter who thinks lace is too challenging. It is the same stitch pattern every other round with a simple shift to give the diagonal effect. I made this one a couple years ago.

Back to Business as Usual

back to business as usual

We are finally getting back to business as usual here. Most of the property repairs have been completed. The only exception to this is some painting. We need to repaint the work shop and storage shed. They have had the roofing replaced and we are waiting for a few warm, dry days to repaint. In January that can be tricky, so we will see when that happens. It may have to wait until spring.

Preparing for the New Year

During the last week of 2023 and the first week of 2024, I have been busy with tasks to close out the old year and get ready for the new one. I spent three days doing inventory. Everything was pretty accurate, with only a few discrepancies.

The next task was doing the end of the year bookkeeping to get ready for income taxes later this month, and also 4th Quarter income and Sales Tax reports. Those tasks took a couple afternoons. I still need to set up new folders for 2024 bookkeeping soon.

My next priority was to use the information gained from my inventory count to determine how much of what needs to be dyed for the spring festival season which begins in early March. So, I spent part of another day organizing that data, making plans, and ordering base yarn. Dyeing will most likely happen in February. The days are getting longer by then and we usually have a mix of warm and cold weather to work with.

Production in the wood shop is at the moment still focused on Shawl and Hair Sticks, but I don’t have any new pictures to show. I do have some picture of the other job I am working my way through, which is washing the booth samples. I try to do this once a year or maybe every other year.

I am not even halfway through them yet. I have an obscene amount of booth samples. (grin) Oh, and speaking of blocking, which I sort of am above, minus the pins, I am finished with Mingling Daisies! I knew that I-cord bond off was going to take awhile with 601 stitches, and it did! It took several sittings to complete it and I think I clocked about 6-7 hours doing it. I haven’t blocked the shawl yet because of all the samples to get done. I can only get so many blocking at at time due to horizontal surface limitations. Here is a picture I took fresh off of the needles to hold you over.

Knitting

Since we are heading into knitting territory at this point in the post, let me show you what I have on the needles now.

Sock Knitting

As you probably can tell, I spend most of my knitting time, making booth samples. I enjoy that knitting and I am not complaining about that. Sometimes it is good to do some stuff that is just for fun too. This year I decided to splurge on my knitting time by joining WestKnits Year of Socks 2024. I guess I am on a bit of a Stephen West knitting binge.

So, the sock pictured above is the December 2023 bonus sock called Billowing Braid Socks. I am making them from some personal stash yarn from Webs that I bought in 2010 to make baby stuff for Elijah. I did make an Owl Vest from it, but had 5 skeins left. It is Webs Valley Yarn Superwash Merino DK. I am using US 3 dpns. I started this sock yesterday afternoon and have already completed the first cuff. You gotta love a DK sock for quickness. These will be “around the house” socks for me.

hand dyed yarn

The January pattern in Socks of 2024 released a few days ago. It’s called Spiral Stash Socks. I can see casting on for these soon, since the cabled DK socks are going so fast.

The yarns above are discontinued colors of Classic Merino Superwash Sock. They are skeins from my personal stash. The design calls for one solid and one self-striping or marled yarn. I am using my hand painted variegated skein in place of the self striping, but I am still undecided about which solid I want to use to go with it. I am leaning towards the purple, because why not? What do you think?

December was Quite a Whirlwind..Literally

December was quite a whirlwind of activity, but not in the way you would expect.

The Whirlwind

On December 9th we spent the day working on product. Jerry was in the work shop sanding Shawl and Hair Sticks and I was applying the final coat of wax finish on some Yarn Boxes. Around 4:20 pm my phone sounded a weather alert. There was a tornado on the ground about 30 miles away and headed our way. I went out to the shop to tell Jerry and he turned off the machines. We went out to watch the sky. There was a dark bank of clouds just west and north of us. The tornado siren went off in downtown Nashville.

We were watching the local radar on my phone and it seemed like the worst might stay just north of us. Around 5:00 pm my phone got a second imminent warning to take cover. Within minutes of that the wind picked up and it began raining so we went inside to take cover. Our safest place, since we don’t have a full basement, was in the hall outside the bathroom. We were on the floor and Jerry was closing all the hall doors when he said “Here it comes, get down!”.

I was praying the Lord’s Prayer loudly when we started hearing stuff hit the roof and house. I was the most scared I have ever been but I also believed we would be alright. By the time I reached the end of the prayer it got quiet and we went to see the damage.

All of these pictures were from the following morning, since the tornado hit right as the sun was setting. The worst of the property damage was to my brand new trailer. We had to get all the inventory out of there and into the work shop that night, since it was still raining off and on. It is amazing that we didn’t lose any of it. I am thanking God for that, since it is our livelihood.

There were five 50+ foot trees on the ground, most ripped up, root ball and all. The power and internet lines were ripped from the roof. The shop and storage shed roofs were missing a whole layer of shingles. The house, thank God, had the least damage. A few windows and screens broken, as well as gutters and vents on the roof.

My truck was hit by flying debris which broke out the driver’s side rear window. Both trucks got some scuffs in the paint by roof shingles. My window was an easy repair, which they came to my house to do a few days later. We haven’t had time to see if the paint scuffs can be easily fixed yet.

NES had our line restored and our power and internet were back within 48 hours. The following two weeks were a blur of phone calls, repairs and cleaning up downed trees and debris. We were able to replace the trailer this past week and get all the inventory out of the shop. We have a roofer coming today and tomorrow to repair the shed and shop.

So, we are getting there and we are so thankful that it wasn’t worse. My heart breaks for the many who were less fortunate. I looked up the NWS report for the storms that hit Middle Tennessee that day. There were 6 or 7 tornadoes of EF2 and EF3 ratings. The one that hit Nashville (us) started literally behind our home. It must have been still forming and went over the top of us, it headed for and touched down near Dickerson Rd. There it flattened several buildings and power lines. The road was closed for about 5 days. It then went on to Gallatin Rd.demolishing businesses and a trailer park. It headed on across the Cumberland River and Old Hickory Dam. It then continued through Hendersonville and Gallatin. The track was almost 24 miles long!

We are insured and all this stuff is replaceable. Christmas this year kind of took a back seat, but we did have a some of the family over, who are nearby and could make it. Life is finally getting back to normal, whatever that means, LOL!

Knitting

I will close my post with what knitting progress I have made on my Mingling Daisies shawl. I am getting close to the finish line on this project. I had been hoping that I would be able to get this out of two skeins but it is going to require a third skein. I am about 17 rows from the end but they are 561-601 stitches long now. So, they take a while.

Time to Head Back Out on the Fiber Market Trail

Southern Comforts Fiber Market

Wells kids, it’s time to head back out on the fiber market trail. Break time is coming to an end and I am off to Charlotte, NC for the Southern Comforts Fiber Market. Click the link for more details. I am looking forward to using my new trailer. I have taken it for a few spins just to check on the brake adjustments and such. Restocking the booth between market days is going to be much easier with all the room to spare. It’s all stocked and ready to hitch up today. I will be driving on Wednesday, setting up on Thursday, and market days are Friday and Saturday.

Oh! I forgot to tell you, we found a new owner for the old black trailer. Hopefully, someone will fix her up and get some more use out of her for many more years.

Knitting

I am glad to be feeling myself again today because I was feeling under the weather for 3-4 days. So much so in fact, that I wasn’t up to knitting. I would pick it up and realize I just didn’t have the energy. I wasn’t severely ill, it was just a low grade fever that hung on for days and a couple days of lower GI discomforts, but knitting a lace edging was a bit taxing. After countless cups of various herbal and medicinal teas, and quite a few bowls of chicken soup, I am grateful that I was feeling better by Sunday. I wanted a least a few days to get back on my feed before hitting the road.

Before I got sick, I had started and completed one of the repeats of the lace edging on my shawl design. I decided 3 skeins would be a decent size. I had 20g of yarn left and the edging should only use 17g, so I should be good. I didn’t touch it again until yesterday. When I picked it back up, I worked 3 repeats in one sitting. There are only 18 repeats across and each is 12 rows. The end is in sight! I am excited to see how it looks when it’s blocked.

Work Shop News

Just a day or so before I was briefly out of commission, we decided it was a good time to make a visit to our lumber supplier. The plan had been to work on more Shawl/Hair Sticks for awhile and get more lumber in the fall. We had bought a few new boards of exotics last month at Woodcraft for these. We revised that plan, however, and decided it was better to go ahead and start a batch of Yarn Boxes first. We had completed a small batch in June to fill out the inventory some, but one wood is already sold out. Time to make more boxes. Who remembers the old Dunkin Donuts commercial? You know the one? “It’s time to make the donuts”, says the sleepy guy who is rising in the middle of the night to get the dough started. That’s what I thought of just now. LOL

While I was trying to get healthy again, Jerry has been busy cutting, sorting, jointing, and planing wood. We bought some walnut, cherry, and white oak. We haven’t made any cherry boxes for quite a few years, and while we use oak quite frequently, it is usually red oak. At this point in the process, they are now all planed to the proper thickness and ready to be marked out for cutting down to the dimensions needed for the sides, tops and bottoms. Then the joinery cuts are made and they get assembled and glued together. There are dozens more steps after that to get to the finished product. These are probably the most labor intensive, as far as number of processing steps, of anything we make.

Parting Comments

Thanks for the comments on my new office. I am really enjoying having my own space. As a matter of fact I am writing this post from there. I got a couple better desk lamps and a desk stuff organizer. I have a comfy chair, which I am in now, for work like this. I am, however, realizing that the kitchen chair as a desk chair is going to have to go. It’s not inviting to sit in for any task longer than, say packing an order. So, I am in the market for a suitable replacement. Maybe I’ll have found one by my next post. We’ll see. See you soon!

A Peek Inside My New Office

In early May our youngest daughter moved out. A few weeks ago we finally got around to turning her room into my new office. I have been putting it to good use ever since then. It’s nice to have a work space where I can leave stuff out if/when I get interrupted from a task in progress. In the past I would have to do most work from the dining table. Having my own office has been a wish that is at last fulfilled.

my desk and sitting area in my new office

I love that I also have this set up as my order filling/shipping station. Everything is at hand which is so wonderful! No more searching for the scissors, tape, packing material, etc.

office and shipping supplies in my new office

This weekend I am working on yarn labels. It’s quite a large batch (1,940 to be exact!) to print, cut and then color label. It is inevitable that I will not get this all done in one sitting so it’s nice to be able to walk away without moving it all to another location.

yarn labels awaiting color name stickers

I hope to get the labels ready to attach to the yarn by Monday. My work room is filled to overflowing at the moment with the yarn that we dyed Thursday, Saturday and Monday.

lots of sorted hand dyed yarn awaiting labels

It took three days of prep work before the first dye day. We also had one prep day in between each of the other two dye days.

soaking yarn for a days work and dye mix buckets
four dye pots set up with tables for sorting and rinsing

We had some rain on Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening. That caused a delay in getting some of the yarn dry but Monday through Wednesday were sunny, so all of the last two days of dyeing were dry by Tuesday evening.

That covers a good bit of what’s been happening around here. I better get busy on those yarn labels. Thanks for reading!

A Bit of Spring Cleaning and More

I have been doing a bit of spring cleaning in between fiber festivals. I think that we are firmly into spring weather. I hope most of the volatile storms are past and we can enjoy the warmth and sunshine.

Last week when we had a few days that were warm and sunny, I washed all the bedding, cleaned the windows, and then washed both trucks.

Of course by the next day they both had tree pollen and bird poop on them, but at least the inside is still clean.

Jerry is totally responsible for putting in the garden. The smaller bed (up close) has kitchen herbs, peppers and a few tomatoes. The larger bed farther away) has some more tomatoes and veggies that we plant from seeds. I think he put out some peas, green beans, summer squash, corn, and possibly some cucumbers.

I also spent part of a day washing, drying and labeling some more Organic Cotton Worsted to restock our inventory.

This past weekend I was in Greencastle, IN for the Greencastle Wool Show. We are long time vendors there and we thought last year was the end. It was thankfully saved from extinction. The weather was great and there was a nice turn out, especially on Saturday.

I have a weekend at home again this week. The next festival on our schedule is the Midwest Fiber Festival in St. Louis. This will be the second year for this one. It was well attended last year and we are looking forward to going back.

In knitting news, I have made some progress on the shawl but not enough to bother with a new picture. It is a nice stitch pattern that is easily memorized. I also love knitting with the Classic Merino Bamboo. That said though, I am getting to the point where I am ready for a change in my knitting, IYKWIM. I may need to cast on a little something for variety soon. I am trying to push through so I can get it ready for the booth and write up the pattern. We’ll see.

It Has Been Quite an Interesting Week

Spring time in middle Tennessee can be volatile and it has been quite an interesting week. It is typical this time of year to be in 70’s or even 80’s but then that can change on a dime and it’s chilly again the next day. We experienced some strong storms with straight line winds over 70 mph on Friday. We lost a few shingles from our work shop and a tree in the back yard. Thankfully that was not near the house. There is a pine tree in the front that was dangerously close to going down which would have taken out the power lines to the house. You could see the ground lifting at the base with the strong gusts. It was very scary, but the winds finally abated and it is still there. For now. It will probably need to come down before the next threat rolls through, just in case.

We did lose power, along with over 115,000 other Nashvillians. There were downed trees, power lines, and poles everywhere. Our electricity was out for about 13 hours. We were fortunate that it wasn’t worse. A little cleaning up is all we had to worry about. There is still the tree to deal with because it is hung in some other trees making it a possible hazard but it is at the back of the property where it’s less of a priority.

So, after all the excitement from the weather was over, it was back to the tasks associated with getting ready for the first festival coming up. Last week I was getting all the new yarn labelled. Then it all needed stored, some went in the trailer and the rest in our work room storage bins. There are also new Darning Eggs, Nostepinnes, and Shawl/Hair Sticks to be tagged/packaged and stored. Like the yarn, some go straight in the trailer with restock in the work room storage.

Yesterday I got the oil changed in my truck. I took along my computer and got some inventory updating done while I was waiting. We did some grocery shopping in the afternoon. Today has mainly been packing for my trip. I will drive to Raleigh, NC in the morning and set up the booth on Thursday at the Carolina Fiber Festival. I have a full schedule on my website, if you’d be interested to see what we have booked this year. If all goes as planned, we will be vending at 21 events this year.

I have made progress on my knitting project but will post a picture of that next time since it’s too dark at the moment to get a good one. I didn’t get started on this post until near dark. So, I’ll sign off for now. It’s almost time to start rummaging in the kitchen for some supper.

Miscellaneous updates

I am very excited about the new drying lines. We ended up with 7 which is almost double what we had before. But that’s not the best part; the proximity to our work area is going to be awesome. I can even see it from in the house looking out any back window. That’s a big help when rain is threatening or if it’s windy, for checking on things.

This was taken from under the cover where we set out the dye pots. Our old lines were way over on the other side of the work shop (the green sided building). This location cuts the distance in half at least, and that’s just our lines. Our neighbor’s that we used are even farther. We will be putting these new lines to use in just a few weeks. We have an order of new yarn arriving very soon to restock for the second half of the festival season.

Now on to knitting updates. I finished the first Gridiron sock.

I cast on Midlothian with my Classic Merino Superwash Sport in Cerulean. It doesn’t look like much yet. It’s just a wee baby shawl still.

Because I was asked to share booth pictures from the Great Lakes Fiber Show, here ya go. The weather was pretty nice and we had a good turn out, especially on Saturday.

I have today and tomorrow at home and then I am off to Franklin, IN for Hoosier Hills Fiber Festival. I got some house cleaning, and school work with my youngest son done today. I also made a pot of spaghetti sauce for dinner. It’s actually good to be able to slow down for a couple days and reconnect with my home and family. It’s nice to travel and meet with the knitters at festivals but it’s even better to come home.

Speaking of home and good things, I want to share one last set of pictures of our garden. I can take absolutely no credit for it. It’s all Jerry’s doing and he is pretty good at it. I can’t wait for fresh veggies. 🙂
