Honeydew Lace Square Knitting Pattern is a lace shawl inspired by traditional Shetland lace squares. This lovely square shawl can be used as a triangle wrap when folded in half diagonally. It can also a light and warm coverlet or heirloom baby blanket.honeyde

The center panel is knit flat from one edge to the other. The inner border is knit in the round from stitches picked up on the four sides. The outer edge is a knitted on edging worked around the perimeter. All stitch patterns are in easy-to-read charts only.

Materials Needed:

  • Classic Merino Superwash Sock or a light fingering weight yarn with 430 yards per 100g; or
  •  Knitting Notions Classic Merino Lace [Classic Merino Lace is discontinued] or any soft heavy lace weight yarn with 385 yards per 50g.
  • 8 stitch markers – one of them should be a different color or style to designate the beginning of the round when working the border in the round.

Finished Dimensions:  Approximately 50” x 52” (not exactly square) after blocking. Measurements taken after fully dry and off the blocking wires.

Yarn Requirements:

  • 4 skeins Classic Merino Superwash Sock (finished shawl weighed 385g, approx. 1660 yards) or
  • 7 skeins Knitting Notions Classic Merino Lace (finished shawl weighed 325g, approx. 2500 yards)

Gauge:

  • Lace weight = 41 stitches = 5 1/4” or
  • Fingering weight = 41 stitches = 8″ in Candlelight Pattern stitch, washed and lightly blocked

Needles:

  • Lace weight – 3US (3.25mm) circular or
  • Fingering weight – 4US (3.5mm) (any length for the flat knit section.
  • You may prefer a 40-47” needle once you begin the border in the round on all four sides)
  • You will also need a second 3US (3.25mm) or 4US (3.5mm) needle for use when removing the waste yarn from the provisional cast of the center section when you begin picking up the stitches around the perimeter to work the inner border.
  • Size 3US (3.25mm) or 4US (3.5mm) double pointed needles for working edging (optional)

(Gauge is not critical, but it is recommended that you knit a swatch to insure you like the fabric created with the needles you choose before casting on for the project. You will want to create a fabric that is slightly springy but open enough to show the holes from the yarn overs. I suggest you cast on 41 stitches and work one repeat of the Candlelight Pattern which is 36 rows.)
